The song ‘Baby Doll’ from ‘Ragini MMS 2’ was an instant hit with music lovers. And the catchy song brought recognition to Manmeet Singh and Harmeet Singh aka ‘Meet Bros’. Rolling out hits like ‘Chittiyaan kalaiyaan’, ‘Hangover’, ‘Pink lips’ and ‘High heels’, the duo has climbed the ladder of success.
Before their musical rendezvous, the two started their career with acting in television serials like ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ and ‘Shagun’. In a conversation with Surupasree Sarmmah, the brothers talk about making their mark in the industry.
When did you get the idea of coming together as music directors?
Harmeet: I had an inclination towards music since my school days. But I had no clue how to go about it, as I had no mentor. I felt it would take the two of us to survive in the industry. I remember having a discussion with Manmeet about venturing in to music, sitting in the college canteen. It was an experiment and we were successful.
You both started off as actors...
Manmeet: Yes, I was primarily into acting but only till our music took off. Harmeet also started acting in television serials like ‘Kusum’ and ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki’.
You have been giving hits after hits. Was there a time when your fame made you nervous?
Manmeet: Honestly speaking, we are very spiritual and we firmly believe in the phrase that everything is destined. So when we know that, there is no fear of success or failure. It is a simple formula of staying away from stress.
The serious one and the chilled out one among the two of you...
Harmeet: 90 percent of the people we meet say Manmeet is the more serious one and I am more on the mischievous side. Which is true to an extent. Manmeet is extremely funny around close people only.
Considering that you never had any formal education, did you face any challenges?
Harmeet: Yes, we did face challenges. The fact that there are no recognised schools dedicated to music. Initially, we didn’t know why we were not successful because according to us, we were making fabulous melodies. But one day we met lyricist Kumar and he wrote a few lyrics for us. That’s when we realised that what we lacked were good lyrics.
A song you would like to call your turning point...
Manmeet: ‘Baby Doll’ changed our lives.
Any music directors you look up to...
Harmeet: We both like R D Burman, A R Rahman and Honey Singh. They are trendsetters and created a revolution in the world of music.
Any projects in the pipeline...
As of now, we are looking forward to our song ‘Shake Karaan’ from ‘Munna Michael’.
