Bengaluru horror: Retired Navy captain, wife murdered by techie-son over 'jobless taunts'

Bengaluru: A retired Indian Navy captain and his wife were murdered in Bengaluru on Wednesday, allegedly by their own son over taunts about his unemployment, police officials said.

Around 8.30 am, morning walkers in Vignan Nagar, near HAL, saw the suspect, Rohan Chandra Bhat (33), running out of the family's villa in bloodstained clothes. They also heard his parents' relentless wails.

The residents rushed into the home and called emergency services. Rohan's parents — Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), a retired Indian Navy captain, and Dr Shyamala Bhat (55), a dentist — were soon rushed to Manipal Hospitals, where doctors declared them brought dead after an examination, a police officer close investigating the case told DH.

Rohan is suspected to have attacked his parents with a knife following a quarrel. The stabbings proved fatal, the officer added.

The HAL police have arrested Rohan for murder and will produce him in the court on Thursday, the officer said.

Citing preliminary investigations, the officer stated that Rohan frequently quarrelled with his father, as the latter reportedly insulted him for being jobless.

Rohan, a software professional, had returned from the US three years ago but didn't take up any work in Bengaluru and lived separately, in Varthur. Aspiring to found his own start-up, he often harassed his parents for money, leading to frequent quarrels, the officer explained as to the possible motive.

However, investigators are probing all possible angles, including a property dispute, the officer added.

The bodies have been shifted to Bowring Hospital for post-mortem, which will be conducted after the couple’s daughter flies in from the US, police said.

A case of murder has been registered based on a complaint from one of the residents.
