Bengaluru: Mahadevapura to get 50-km safe footpaths in two months

Bengaluru: Over 120 people participated in the 10-km walkathon organised by the Bengaluru East City Corporation on Sunday.

Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, who took part in the event, instructed the corporation to develop 50 km of safe and accessible pedestrian pathways in the Mahadevapura Zone within the next two months.

After flagging off a 10-km pedestrian walk, Rao said prioritising footpath development in areas along the metro corridors would greatly benefit people. He directed officials to identify and remove obstacles on footpaths, resolve road-widening issues, and clear other encroachments to ensure safe pedestrian movement.

The pedestrian walk, part of the ‘Project Walkaluru’ initiative, began on November 1. So far, a total of 88 km of footpaths have been inspected across areas, including Shivajinagar (11 km), Koramangala (5 km), Jayanagar (5 km), Banaswadi (5 km), Thanisandra (8 km), Yelahanka (10 km), and Bengaluru South.

During Sunday’s walkathon, people covered a continuous 10-km stretch of footpath along the metro's Purple Line from Phoenix Marketcity Mall to Hope Farm. They identified issues such as the need to repair slabs at 10 locations, unauthorised vehicle parking at two spots, construction materials dumped at one area, illegal encroachment at one location, and Bescom-related technical issues at four locations.

Officials were instructed to resolve all identified issues immediately.

Corporation Commissioner Ramesh DS, Development Additional Commissioner Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar and other officials were part of the walkathon.
