Bengaluru techie accused of killing parents performs last rites under security

Bengaluru:  The last rites of retired navy captain Naveen Chandra Bhat and his wife Dr Shyamala were performed at the Wilson Garden crematorium on Saturday evening by their son Rohan Chandra Bhat, who is accused of killing them, under tight police security. 

Rohan (33), a US-return techie currently under treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), was escorted by personnel from the HAL police station, along with Wilson Garden police, to the crematorium around 5 pm.

After the rituals, he was taken back to Nimhans.

A senior police officer said that the court permitted Rohan to perform the last rites after his sister, Rashmi Chandra Bhat, 31, who flew in from the US on Friday, approached a Bengaluru court seeking permission for her brother — the only son in the family — to attend the funeral. 

The postmortem examination was conducted in Bowring Hospital before handing over the bodies to the family. 

Rohan is accused of fatally stabbing his parents — Naveen Chandra Bhat (60), and Shyamala Bhat (55), a dentist — at their villa in a gated community in Vignan Nagar near HAL on Wednesday.  Investigators from HAL police said Rohan will be produced before the court on February 17 and is likely to be remanded in judicial custody, as no further custodial interrogation is required at this stage.
