Centre to review Namma Metro Phase 2 costs after proposal submission

The Union government will review the cost hike of ₹9,729.90 crore in Namma Metro’s Phase 2 after the state government submits its proposal, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, said on Friday.

He was speaking in Bengaluru, reviewing the performance of several urban projects in the city in the presence of several Karnataka ministers and senior officials.

He noted that while the state government has submitted its proposal for the 36.59 km Sarjapura–Hebbal line under Phase 3A at an estimated cost of about ₹28,405 crore, it needs to be examined by an expert agency.

“The project will be taken up for sanction by the Centre once a reply is received from the Government of Karnataka,” he said.

The Karnataka Cabinet approved this estimate in December 2024.

Legacy waste 

Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, directed officials to tackle legacy waste issues on priority, emphasised the reuse of treated water, and pushed for higher floor area ratio (FAR) along mass transit corridors to reduce road congestion and encourage greater use of public transport.

The minister encouraged Karnataka to undertake financial reforms to claim the 50-year interest-free loan under the ‘Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI) 2025–26’ to meet funding requirements.
