Five years on, Bengaluru's Banaswadi rotary flyover remains a non-starter

Bengaluru: The proposal to decongest Dodda Banaswadi main road near Mukunda theatre has been a non-starter.

The civic body had proposed construction of an elevated rotary flyover at least five years ago. Fed up with the prolonged delay, over a dozen civic groups have launched an online petition, renewing their demand to start the long-pending project.

In its online petition, which has already received 2,500 signatories, the Bengaluru Mobility Federation describes the traffic bottleneck as a decade-old problem that continues to disrupt daily life for thousands of commuters.

"Our families experience this challenge daily, worsening pollution and extending commute time, which cuts into our professional efficiency, time spent with families, and overall well-being,” the petition read.

The federation comprises several Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) representing areas such as Banaswadi, Kalyan Nagar, Horamavu, Hennur, HRBR Layout, Kammanahalli and Ramamurthy Nagar, among others. The members recently met Energy Minister KJ George, MLA of Sarvagnanagar, to expedite the project.

The proposed rotary flyover above the IOC Junction is seen as a critical intervention to decongest Dodda Banaswadi main road, a key link between North Bengaluru and the city centre, including Indiranagar, Baiyappanahalli, Fraser Town and Pulakeshinagar.

Residents say resolving this bottleneck could have a cascading impact on easing traffic flow across the north-east, especially as motorists are now travelling longer distances to avoid the existing narrow flyover at Mukunda theatre. As a result, congestion is seen along Old Madras Road near Baiyappanahalli and at Lingarajapuram flyover as well.

Officials are yet to confirm timelines for the project’s execution. They said the proposal to engage a construction firm, selected through the tendering process, has been sent to the Urban Development Department (UDD) for approval.
