JD(S) legal cell petitions Karnataka Governor over GBA elections

Bengaluru: The Legal Cell of JD(S) has petitioned the Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday requesting for constitutional intervention to restore democratic functioning at the local level to conduct elections for Greater Bengaluru.

In the petition, they stated that the situation would warrant being brought to the notice of the President of India as indicative of a failure of constitutional machinery in the state, necessitating appropriate constitutional intervention to restore democratic functioning at the local level.

“As the highest constitutional authority in the state, your excellency is entrusted with the duty of ensuring that constitutional bodies function independently and in accordance with the Constitution
and that democratic processes are not subverted,” they stated.

The petition further reads, “In these circumstances, we most respectfully seek your intervention to instruct the state Election Commission and the state government to abide by the constitutional mandate and to take such appropriate and necessary action as may be warranted to ensure strict constitutional compliance, including addressing any acts of delay or non-compliance by concerned authorities.”
