Dance and music groups from three Latin American nations will make Delhiites groove to their tunes this weekend. Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has organised a three-day festival of Latin American music and dance.
.
The festival ‘Fiesta Latino Americano’ will bring music dance performances from Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. Colombia’s nine-member ‘Mama Julia’ group will re-create the sounds of Afro-Colombian music with a touch of street style. The band was formed in 2008 and their songs speaks out on social issues and everyday life, for which the idea came through a process of investigation of traditional and urban music, led by it director and creator Joaquin Salcedo.

The rhythm of the band is made up of traditional percussion from the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, which is accompanied by the sweet jungle sound of the Chonta Marimba, typical of the Southern Pacific coast.

Folkloric ballet group from the University of Veracruz will be performing along with music group ‘Tlen Huicani’ with styles such as Ranchero, Norteno and Jarocho. They will give a presentation on folkloric music and dance from different parts of the country.

The 29-member group committed to keeping the traditions of the Mexican customs alive, is known for its rich culture - with vibrant colours and excited dances that embrace the beauty of such a diverse country.

Seven members of the music and dance group from Argentina will present a 90-minute show ‘Tango Emotions’ that balances the sensuality of dance, the power of music and warmth of poetry. The show will be created by Enrique Cuttini, who has got great feedback for it in the past. He is a music professor, pianist and choral director.

The festival is a result of dialogue between Indian ambassadors in Latin America and the Latin ambassador in Delhi at the initiative of the ICCR.

Dr Suresh K Goel, Director General, ICCR says, “Indians and Latin Americans are similar in many ways at a cultural level. They both have a great sense of rhythm, beat and tempo. Their music and dance both celebrate life and energy. The Latin American dance and music therefore should find immediate acceptance in India.”

“I am happy that some of the countries have agreed to participate in the Fiesta Latino Americano. The process has not been an easy one because of a lack of history and the challenges of geography which add to the cost of doing such a Festival in New Delhi.

However it is satisfying to see it finally coming together on the ground in the manner it was conceived on paper,” he adds. These performances will be held at Sirifort Auditorium on April 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. on all days.
