Man in custody attempts suicide at Bengaluru's Electronics City police station

A 36-year-old man arrested in a criminal case allegedly attempted suicide inside the Electronics City police station on Sunday by swallowing a hanger hook.

Police said he had threatened investigators and demanded to be let off without any legal action.

Ravi Prasad MP, a resident of Basavanapura, was taken into custody for cheating and assault involving a woman dentist.

During police custody, as officers were preparing to take him for medical examination, he went to the toilet, removed a hanger hook from the wall and collected bangle pieces from a flowerpot to swallow. He then returned to the cell.

Meanwhile, police noticed him and asked what he was chewing. He then threatened to reveal the details only if officers assured him he would be released without legal action or further inquiry.

Sensing danger, police rushed him to hospital, where he recovered after being administered first aid. He was later remanded to judicial custody.

The Electronics City police have registered a case in connection with the incident and launched further investigations.

A senior police officer said Prasad, a Maharashtra native who worked as a civil contractor, had befriended the woman after taking up renovation work at her dental clinic.

Since September, he had been harassing her and sending threats and making sexual advances, despite her getting married. Upset over his harassment, the dentist filed a police complaint against him on February 10.
