<p>Ghazal maestros and well-known poets come together to mark the death anniversary of the poetic genius.<br /><br />In an effort to making Mirza Ghalib’s death anniversary an annual occasion of celebrating his poetic genius, The Ghalib Memorial Movement (GMM) recently marked a two-day event ‘Yadgar-e-Ghalib’ from April 26 to 27 at the India Islamic Centre.</p>.<p> The programme included the release and screening of a film Yadgar-e-Ghalib produced by eminent Kathak dancer Uma Sharma, a performance by Uma and her troupe on the couplets of the poet with recitation by author Pawan K. Verma, and a Mushaira baithak recreating durbar tehzeeb rendered in the Mughal andaaz. </p>.<p>A shamadaan and use of traditional hand-held fans reproduced the atmosphere of a bygone era. <br /><br />A little over a century and four decades have passed since the death of Ghalib, but his poetry continues to be relevant and finds space in common conversations even today. His ghazals are unique not only for the intensity of emotions and the thoughts they express but also for their timeless philosophy on life. The ICCR has been at the forefront of efforts to adding more and more exquisite memorabilia to Ghalib’s haveli in Chandni Chowk as well as put it on the tourist map. On this occasion too, they left no stone unturned.<br /><br />The verses for the performance were especially selected to bring out the Sufi Ghalib. Ghalib praises the spring season’s fresh air as he sees God in everything and everyone. The universal appeal of his thought that makes people ponder over issues of life, death and love left the listeners spellbound. The dancers captured three moods - the remorseful, lonely and the philosopher befitting the death anniversary.<br /><br />Eminent ghazal maestro Ustad Moin Khan from Mumbai presented his repertoire and well-known poets from the Indian sub-continent participated in the mushaira. The film on Ghalib included a segment of recitation of his couplets by well-known names like AN Sardar Jafri, Kaifi Azmi, Ahmed Feroz (Pakistan), Javed Akhtar, Ramnath Awasthi, Bekul Utsahi and many others.<br /><br />The eminent poets participating in this year’s Mushaira included Uday Pratap Singh, Nawaz Deobandi, Rahat Indori, Sharaf Nanparvi, Kursheed Haider, Aizaz Merut, Manzar Bhopali, Munnawar Rana, Wasim Barelvi, Salim Sidiqui, Anwar Jalalpuri, Shahid Anjum and Laxmi Shanker Vajpayee among others.<br /><br />The current year is the 13th year of Ghalib related events initiated by the Ghalib Memorial Movement with the support of the ICCR, the Delhi government and the <br />India Islamic Cultural Centre.<br /></p>
