A huge hit for the last three seasons, the peplum trend is likely continue to remain the fad even in the upcoming autumn/winter and spring seasons. According to fashion pundits, peplum has been one of the most popular trends so far because of its perfect lady-like, flirtatious look that makes the waist-line look slim and accentuates curves at the same time.

Thanks to the sleek look and added ruffles on jackets, blouses, tops, suits and gowns, the peplums today are being worn by women of all age groups. Quick on the uptake have been homegrown actresses like Bipasha Basu, Asin, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Preity Zinta among others, who have been sporting the fashion.
The original trend of peplum dates back to 1800s, which was used as an overskirt, and later brought to the fore in 1940s by Christian Dior. The fashion faded in 1950s and made a comeback in 1980s and early 1990.

Again, in 2000 peplum gained prominence internationally. Since last two years Indian designers are widely using it on different fabrics with new cuts and designs.

According to Rahul Mishra, a fashion designer peplum can be carried in all seasons. He recently showcased peplum jackets of Kerala mundu fabric at a recently concluded fashion week. “In summer bouncy and flared peplums were in. For winter one can make a smart choice by going for fitted peplums. They are structured and give a sleek shape. The overall look of the peplum depends upon your body shape, height and the way it is paired with the bottom outfit.”

For sporting a casual look, a simple peplum jacket can be teamed with skinny jeans or a classic cut dress. Tank top with ruffles around the waistline paired with pencil skirts are a great option for evening and cocktail parties.

Professionals can also go with peplums. Pair a fitted peplum top or jacket with a sleek trouser or a wide-leg or slim cropped pants. Neutral shade trousers usually look good with indigo or burgundy coloured peplum tops.

“The ultimate look of peplum comes with a right colour combination. To minimise broad shoulders and a larger bust wear a dark toned peplum with a lighter shade for either trouser, skirt or gown. For a slim look, pair darker bottoms with light coloured peplum tops,” says Rahul.

Accessories should be minimal if you are wearing a peplum top, jacket or a blouse. “To keep the overall look stylish wear chunky earrings and opt for a neckpiece only if the neckline is deep. Peplum gives a sharp look, so the hair should be neatly done with no head accessories,” informs Rahul.
