Bengaluru: Three Bengaluru-based consultancy firms have commenced the work on preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for a combination of 16 infrastructure projects, including flyovers, elevated corridors, and underpasses, spanning a total length of 110 kilometres. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which awarded the contracts recently, aims to have the DPRs ready within the next three months.

The three firms entrusted with the task are Infra Support Engineering Consultants Pvt Ltd, Nagesh Consultants, and Siddhi Shakti Projects. According to sources, two of these firms have previously worked with BBMP on similar DPR assignments.
.
Among the 16 proposed projects is a major elevated corridor stretching up to 27 kilometres between KR Puram and Yeshwantpur (Mathikere Cross). These proposals stem from recommendations made in a feasibility study by Altinok Engineering, a New Delhi-based consultancy, aimed at easing traffic congestion in Bengaluru. The firm also suggested two underground roads cutting across key parts of the city.
.Tender process under way for DPR of proposed Peripheral Ring Road for Mysuru.
The report has also suggested elevated road proposals on stretches such as Nagawara Junction to Bagaluru Main Road, Hennur Main Road to Bagalur Junction, and Ragigudda to 7th Main Junction, connecting to Kanakapura Road. However, the consultant has not offered any solutions to the traffic issues in some of the city’s most rapidly developing zones such as Mahadevapura, KR Puram, and Bommanahalli.

Urban mobility expert Satya Arikutharam has urged BBMP and the state government not to consider the feasibility study, stating that it lacks a scientific approach. He pointed out that the 658-page report does not mention the dates of the traffic surveys, casting doubt on whether any real-time studies were conducted.

“I am not entirely opposed to short tunnels or flyovers, but a proper network analysis is essential to identify the root causes of congestion,” he said. “Traffic bottlenecks could result from abrupt lane reductions or inefficient signal timings. For instance, Goraguntepalya Junction may require a flyover, but not every road needs grand infrastructure,” he said.

Arikutharam also raised concerns that two key Metro lines – from Hebbal to Silk Board and from JP Nagar to Hebbal Outer Ring Road – are facing delays due to overlapping plans for tunnel roads and elevated corridors.

So far, the BBMP has prepared a DPR for an 18.5-km tunnel road between Central Silk Board and Hebbal, which faced criticism for allegedly being a copy-paste version of a similar Mumbai project.

The civic body is yet to finalise tenders for another DPR – for a 28.5-km tunnel road between KR Puram and Nayandahalli Junction – despite having floated bids twice. Sources say that Rodic Consultants, who prepared the previous 18.5-km DPR, were the sole bidder for the newer tunnel project as well.
