Vrishabhavathi overflows, Silk Board flooded; Bengaluru grinds to a halt due to heavy rain

Bengaluru: Heavy rain on Friday triggered waterlogging, overflowing of stormwater drains, and traffic snarls across several parts of Bengaluru.

The overflowing Vrishabhavathi Valley caused a flood-like situation at Nayandahalli Junction. The Central Silk Board Junction was flooded after the evening downpour, with even the newly constructed metro station area completely marooned.

Traffic crawled on Ambedkar Veedhi near Vidhana Soudha, Indiranagar, Vasanthnagar, Ballari Road, KR Market, Corporation Circle, Sampangi Ramnagar and surrounding streets, where knee-deep water was reported.

Slow-moving and standstill traffic was seen on Windsor Manor Bridge towards Palace Cross, Mysuru Road towards Veterinary Junction, Brigade Road towards Opera Junction, and Majestic.

Waterlogging was reported at Siddalingaiah Junction, Sarakki, Pattandur Agrahara towards ECC Road, Mission Road, Cubbon Road, Whitefield Main Road and the Outer Ring Road.

Manholes overflowed near the ISKCON Temple. 

GBA Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao inspected the waterlogging at KR Circle underpass and directed officials to take immediate measures to address flooding, ensure traffic movement and deploy emergency response teams at vulnerable locations.

Rain to continue till Tuesday

Light to moderate rain with thundershowers and gusty winds is forecast for Bengaluru city and Bengaluru Rural district till Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

Winds of 30 to 40 kmph are likely, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover between 32 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Dry conditions may return between June 3 and 5.

"Current predictions show that rainfall will decrease after three to four days. Because it is fully northerly wind, that is why the possibility is less. But it is difficult to predict up to five days as the model is rapidly changing. It is not consistent," said Dr N Puviarasan, Scientist 'F' and Head, Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru.
