A 28-year-old woman bartender has been found murdered in her rented flat in Nrupathunga Layout in RT Nagar on Saturday afternoon.

Police believe that Zara could have been killed between 8 pm and midnight on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Dharmender Kumar Meena said the killer had smashed Zara’s head repeatedly on the edge of the iron cot.

“We suspect someone known to her is behind this murder,” he said, adding that police have detained a suspect and are questioning him.

Zara’s brother found her dead when he came to check on her at 12.30 pm Saturday, after her fiancé told him he could not reach her phone Friday night. Her brother first knocked her door and, since he was not getting a response, climbed on the balcony only to discover Zara’s body inside the flat.

A police officer who's part of the investigation said Zara fought with her female roommate Friday evening and evicted her from their first-floor flat. The roommate’s sister’s husband was present during the altercation.

A Chhattisgarh native, Zara had been living in Bengaluru for five years and was in Mumbai before.

RT Nagar police have taken up a murder case and are investigating. Zara’s sister’s husband is regarded as a suspect in the murder. “The precise cause of death and the motive behind the murder will be ascertained only after the killer is caught,” police said, refusing to give more details.
