<p class="title">To bring back the glory of famed Udupi saree, a campaign titled ‘Save Udupi saree” will be organised, said Prasanna Heggodu of Charaka. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Speaking to reporters here, on Monday, he said in the past hundreds of weavers were engaged in weaving Udupi sarees.</p>.<p class="bodytext">“Over a period of time, several weavers have deserted their occupation due to various reasons. At present, only 40 weavers are engaged in weaving Udupi sarees. There is a need to revive Udupi saree,” he added. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Stating that Udupi saree has Geographical Indication recognition, he said there was a demand for eco-friendly Udupi saree. There is a need to provide suitable facilities to market the sarees. </p>.<p class="bodytext">The campaign is initiated by Kadike Trust of Karkala, Charaka, and Desi of Bengaluru. A series of programmes will be organised as a part of the campaign to promote Udupi saree, said Prasanna.</p>.<p class="bodytext">He said the campaign aims to create awareness on the legacy of Udupi saree, support for the weavers, use of natural colours in saree weaving, training youth in weaving and<br />providing marketing facilities for the sarees across the country. </p>.<p class="bodytext">Prasanna said Talipadi Weavers Association is active in Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada. Kadike Trust will impart training to those interested in weaving.</p>
