<p>Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, on Monday, bemoaned that the deep-rooted caste system has put a spoke in the progress of the otherwise rich country like India.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Addressing the gathering after releasing five books on her father, the late former deputy prime minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, translated from Hindi to Kannada under the aegis of Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Studies, Research and Extension Centre, University of Mysore, Meira Kumar said, “Whenever there is a talk on India, we talk about scholarly people, abundant natural resources, the lofty Himalayas and also caste system. It is nothing but a bane of society that has put the country behind, albeit with abundant wealth in terms of development.”<br /><br />Meira Kumar, though sounded pensive, went on to describe the pain of untouchables who are demoralised, humiliated and insulted due to the scourge of casteism. <br /><br />“The impact is such that, a large section of the population, who can contribute to the progress of the country, are not able to do so. Education should have helped society get rid of caste system, but, it has failed to do so.”<br /><br />DonationMeira Kumar promised to donate the transcriptions of her father’s speeches and lectures to the centre named after her father in Mysuru. Besides, she promised to share the copies of the forthcoming literary works on her father, running up to four volumes, with the centre.<br /><br />The five books include Kannada translation of ‘Dekhi sunee beethi bathein’, in three volumes in Hindi by Indrani, wife of Jagjivan Ram, titled ‘Nenapu Sanjeevini’. They were translated by Lakshminarayana Aurora, Thippe- swamy and Kumaraswamy H M. The other two are Kannada translation of ‘Inkha sangarshamay jeevan’ by Indrani, titled ‘Horaatada baduku’. Thippeswamy and G S Bhat are the translators, with the centre’s director Mylahalli Revanna as chief editor.<br /><br />State Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya said, “The pain of caste system can be felt by only those who have experienced it. Though Babu Jagjivan Ram suffered the heat of the caste system to its nadir, emerged a leader of repute.”<br /><br /> </p>
