<p>Chikkamagaluru: The Tourism Department has decided to monitor the movement of tourists at Mullayyanagiri, a major tourist destination in Chikkamagaluru district, through CCTV surveillance. As a trial, CCTV cameras have been installed at two locations, and their effectiveness is being assessed.</p><p>The number of tourists visiting Mullayyanagiri and Bababudangiri has increased over the last few years. Carrying plastic bottles to these locations has already been banned. Lockers have been installed near Kaimara Check Post where liquor bottles have to be deposited. However, verbal duels among tourists and check-post staff break out frequently and CCTV cameras have been installed to manage such situations.</p><p>“CCTV cameras at the check-post will allow officials to observe the happenings from their mobile phones. Video calling facilities have also been introduced to help manage adverse situations effectively,” Tourism Department officials said.</p><p>Additionally, CCTV cameras have been installed near the vehicle parking area at Seethalayyanagiri. Pravasi Mitras too have been deployed at various spots and their activities are being monitored by officials. This set-up will help in managing vehicle congestion at Seethalayyanagiri by controlling the entry of additional vehicles based on traffic conditions, officials added.</p><p><strong>Solar-powered cameras</strong></p><p>Solar-powered cameras have been installed on a trial basis. If it works, similar installations will be considered at key eco-tourism spots such as Honnammanahalli and Devaramane. However, installing cameras near Rani Jhari Falls is challenging following network issues.</p><p>“The recorded footage will be stored for three months allowing legal action against tourists violating rules. If Pravasi Mitras or other personnel cause inconvenience to visitors, appropriate action will be taken against them too,” officials clarified.</p><p><strong>Smart solutions on anvil</strong></p><p>This apart, the district administration plans to manage weekend traffic congestion at Mullayyanagiri by introducing a sensor-based smart parking and check-post system.</p><p>A new spot is being identified to relocate the existing check-post at Kaimara. Plans are in place to construct hi-tech restrooms, a lounge, and a purified drinking water facility near the check-post gate.</p><p>At the parking zones in Seethalayyanagiri and Dattapeeta, the number of parked vehicles will be monitored at the check-post. Entry will be restricted to a fixed number of vehicles and additional vehicles will only be allowed once the existing ones leave the area.</p>
