Census 2027 begins; Chief Secy Shalini Rajneesh, DG & IGP M A Saleem self-enumerate

Bengaluru: The first phase of the National Census 2027 started in the state with Chief Secretary (CS) Shalini Rajneesh and DG&IGP M A Saleem leading by example by completing their registration on the official portal (se.census.gov.in).

The self-enumeration facility – introduced by the Union government as part of Census 2027 – allows citizens to submit their demographic details online over the next fifteen days. 

After completing the exercise, Shalini Rajneesh urged all residents to utilise the official portal to complete the process, which is simple, secure and citizen-friendly.

Sharing her experience, she noted that the process took just 5 to 10 minutes and required only a mobile number and OTP verification.

Upon completion, users receive an application reference number. This number can be shared with enumerators who will conduct door-to-door visits between April 16 and May 15. The reference enables quicker verification and allows for corrections, if required, the government said in a press note.

Saleem said he completed self-enumeration just by using the smartphone, indicating that the process was simple and easy to use. 

For those without access to mobile phones or computers, the chief secretary advised using computer centres in their neighbourhood or assistance from friends and family to complete the process and obtain the reference number.

Describing the census as a critical exercise for the country’s progress, she said the data would be used for framing new policies and programmes.

“Accurate data will guide resource allocation in key sectors such as healthcare, education, housing, and infrastructure,” she said, urging citizens to participate actively.

In Bengaluru, officials are preparing to onboard about 20,000 enumerators for door-to-door visits that start on April 16.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is coordinating with five city corporations in preparatory work, which includes demarcation of blocks, each comprising 200 houses.

Government officials and teachers will be roped in as enumerators, Bengaluru Central City Corporation Commissioner P Rajendra Cholan said.
