<p>Mangaluru: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader who is also Mangalore constituency MLA said that the second phase of the major drinking water project to supply water to all villages coming under Mangalore Assembly constituency has been taken up. The funds have been released for the second phase of the project which ensures potable drinking water supply to all residents soon. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 500 crore.</p><p>He told mediapersons that water is supplied to Ullal and some of the villages on a trial basis. The project is being implemented by the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.</p><p>He said the project was being planned keeping in mind the growth in the next 30 years.</p><p>He said that water from Nethravathi river will be lifted for the supply. In the first phase, a jackwell was constructed at Sajipa and treatment plant at Konaje. Main pipelines have been laid in all the villages. In the second phase, one or two overhead tanks will be constructed in each village and pipelines will be laid from the overhead tanks. Later, pipelines will be laid to the habitations to supply water to the households.</p><p>He said, at present, water was being supplied to Ullal from the Thumbe vented dam. “When the water level in the Thumbe dam recedes, Ullal gets affected. The project will overcome this problem. The project will be completed in the next one-and-a-half years.” With this, water will be supplied to KSRP unit at Assaigoli, Mangalore University and other major installations in the constituency.</p>.BWSSB mulls making Cauvery water must for apartments.<p>To a query on restoration of road dug for laying water pipeline, he said that once all the work pertaining to laying pipelines is completed , restoration work will be taken up. In fact, around Rs 20 crore is set aside for the purpose.</p><p>Khader said, “To store water in the Thumbe and Harekal-Adyar dam to their full capacity, more than Rs 150 crore would be required for acquiring land in the surrounding villages. Instead, raising the embankments of the reservoirs by adding soil and constructing roads on top of them would be a more cost-effective solution. This would eliminate the need for land acquisition.”</p><p><strong>PDS centre at Kumpala</strong></p><p>A PDS (Public Distribution System) centre will be inaugurated on February 4 at Kumpala. The centre will be managed by a cooperative society. The residents of Kumpala and Kolya travelled to Thokkottu in the absence of a PDS centre.</p><p><strong>'Happy with my responsibility'</strong></p><p>To a query on induction into Cabinet during the next cabinet expansion, U T Khader "I have not given any thought to it. I am happy to be the Speaker of Karnataka Assembly. No such discussion has ever taken place. I am the Speaker of the Assembly and I have no idea what discussion is taking place at the Congress high command level. I want to be happy with what ever responsivity is entrusted on me. Even if I have to retire and live without any official position, I will be content," they responded to a question.</p>
