The Kuvempu University has enabled teachers to evaluate answer-scripts in the comfort of their homes. It is said to be the first public university in the state to adopt this method.
.
It has given remote access to evaluators of scanned copies of answer scripts for undergraduate exams held last month for the second, fourth and sixth semesters. Evaluators will evaluate 4.5 lakh answer scripts of over 65,000 students.
.
Kuvempu University registrar (evaluation) S M Gopinath told DH that the varsity had tried its hand at digital evaluation in previous semester and evaluators discharged duties in five designated centres - Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Koppa, Kadur and Sagar. This time, they need not come to these centres.
.In a first, Kuvempu University to get Forest Monitoring Centre.
Gopinath said the system had been designed in such a way that it alerts evaluators if they commit mistakes.
.
For example, if an evaluator gives eight marks against the five marks earmarked for an answer, the system alerts him or her.
.
If, for instance, the evaluator evaluates all eight questions answered by the examinee, when the latter had to attempt only six, the system alerts the evaluator through the computer or laptop he is using.
.
The system also helps in totalling the marks awarded in each paper, almost eliminating the possibility of errors, he said.
.
The entire evaluation process is live-streamed and officials can keep a watch on the evaluators from their office on the university campus.
.
The web camera starts functioning when the evaluator logs in. So, there is no scope for impersonation, Gopinath explained.
.
The evaluators can neither take printouts of scanned answer scripts sent to them nor take photos of them. The first page of the answer script is covered to hide the identity of the student.
.
Gopinath said those who wish to come to the designated centres for evaluation can do so this time, if they don’t have laptop or computer at home.
.
Vice-chancellor Sharath Ananthamurthy told DH that the new system would hugely reduce the cost of evaluation. The varsity gets to save on travel and other allowances to evaluators.
.
“Most public universities are facing a dearth of funds. So, we decided to introduce this system. We have a good technical team. This time remote access has been made optional and it is likely to become mandatory from next semester.”
