Former Legislative Assembly Speaker Basavanneppa Gadlappagouda Banakar passed away here on Wednesday night. He was 91, reports DHNS from Hirekerur, Haveri district. He is survived by wife, three sons including legislator U B Banakar and two daughters. A three-time MLA, Banakar was the Animal Husbandry minister in Chief Minister Devaraj Urs' Cabinet. He was the Speaker of the Assembly between 1985 and 1989. His last rites will be performed at Hirekerur at 3 pm on Thursday, a family source said.
