<p>While ‘Chikkagadiyara’ is synonymous for hawkers selling their produce, it is also infamous for bearing the stench of rotten vegetables, flowers and fruits.<br /><br />Clad in orange, more than 150 students undertook the drive to rid the area of its garbage dumps. <br /><br />Each team of 20 students led by a group leader, strolled through the bylanes of Shivarampet, Devaraja Market and around ‘Chikkagadiyara’ collecting rubbish, much to the curious looks of the bystanders. <br /><br />The cleanliness drive was part of the ‘Amala Bharatham’ campaign initiated by Mata Amritanandamayi. It aims at improving awareness among people to refrain from throwing garbage on the streets and avoid spitting on the roads.<br /><br />Flagging off the event, Medical Education and District In-Charge Minister S A Ramdas opined that apart from the cleanliness drive it was also important to improve awareness among traders and public to keep the heart of the city free of garbage. Continuing, he said that apart from efforts to clean the place, it was also important for similar mindset of people. <br /><br />He mentioned that it was also essential to join the fight to root out corruption and the onus rested on elected representatives.<br /><br />He also asserted that the order to ban plastic from the city would be released within 15 days, making MCC’s initiative strong. Mayor Sandesh Swamy, Deputy Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath and others were present on the occasion.</p>
