<p>Belagavi: Torrential rains continued to lash Belagavi and Khanapur taluks for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, severely disrupting daily life. While moderate showers were reported in other parts of the district, the intense downpour in the two taluks led to waterlogging, uprooted trees, and traffic disruptions.</p><p>Low-lying areas across Belagavi City, including Aman Nagar, Maruti Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, and Malaprabha Nagar in Vadgaon, were inundated, causing significant inconvenience to residents. In response, the district administration declared a holiday for anganwadis, government, aided, unaided schools, and pre-university colleges in the affected taluks.</p><p>In Khanapur taluk, the Halatri Nallah overflowed onto the Khanapur-Hemmadga bridge, disrupting traffic on the Khanapur-Anmod-Goa route. Additionally, the Maruti and Shiva temples in Habbanatti village were submerged by the rising waters of the Malaprabha River.</p><p>The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) took emergency measures to ease waterlogging. BCC personnel cut a road divider at Udyambag on the Belagavi-Khanapur Road to facilitate the drainage of stagnant water. Trees continued to be uprooted for a second day due to the persistent rainfall.</p><p><strong>‘No need to panic’</strong></p><p>BCC Commissioner Shubha B said that apart from water accumulation in some areas, no major issues have emerged. “We have formed response teams to assist residents and identified 36 locations for setting up relief centres, should the situation worsen. There is no need to panic,” she assured.</p><p>Meanwhile, HESCOM reported that around 15 transformers were damaged due to the rains, affecting power supply in several areas. “We have replaced damaged transformers in Ramthirth Nagar, Sadashiv Nagar, Auto Nagar, Sri Nagar, CADA Quarters, and other localities,” said HESCOM Assistant Executive Engineer Subdivision-3 Ashwin Shinde.</p><p>In the Western Ghats region of Khanapur taluk, continuous rainfall rejuvenated several nallahs and water bodies. The Malaprabha River has witnessed a sharp rise in inflow, now recorded at 7,014 cusec. Water storage in the Malaprabha Dam has also increased to 14.279 TMC.</p><p>Belagavi MLA Asif Sait visited rain-affected areas along with BCC officials to assess the situation. He instructed officials to expedite relief measures and ensure that problems caused by the rain are promptly addressed.</p>
