Job recruitments: Basavaraj Bommai urges govt to provide internal quota by consensus

Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday urged the government to recruit for jobs by implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and taking all communities into confidence.

Bommai told reporters here: "I am not aware of the governor approving the internal reservation (bill). The government needs clarity on recruitments. If they have the will, everything is possible. But they are confused. Before recruitments, they should discuss with all communities and take them into confidence". 

The Haveri-Gadag MP's statement comes at a time when the government has issued an order to fill 56,432 government job vacancies without following internal reservation. 

During Bommai’s tenure as chief minister, the reservation share in the state was increased from 50% to 56%, and internal reservation was also announced for SCs, even though the Supreme Court was yet to empower states to do so. 

"The government has enforced a law for internal reservation. Thus, all communities are seeking internal reservation. The problem has to be resolved. Legal experts must be consulted".

The Bommai-led BJP government's decision to provide internal reservation — 6% for SC (left)/Madigas, 5.5% for SC (right)/Holeyas, 4.5% for Lambanis, Bhovi, Korma and Korcha communities and 1% for nomadic communities — had electorally backfired as the Lambani, Bhovi, Korma and Korcha communities protested against the distribution.
