Karnataka Cabinet decides to relook into functioning of KAT

Bengaluru: The Cabinet on Thursday decided to have a relook into the system in the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) after deliberating on its functioning.

Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said: “There have been discussions and outcries about the functioning of the KAT. The government is thinking about the system and the functioning of the tribunal.”

Recently, the KAT had annulled the notification issued by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) to recruit 384 gazetted probationers, citing a violation of the 50% cap on reservations set by the Supreme Court. The KPSC notification had followed the 56% reservation model, in tune with the previous Basavaraj Bommai-led government’s decision to increase reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) from 15 to 17% and for Scheduled Tribes (STs) from 3 to 7%. 

Cashless treatment

The Cabinet also approved a proposal by the Health and Family Welfare Department to provide cashless treatment worth Rs 5 lakh to three lakh contract workers in government departments and their dependents through the “Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust.”

Workers have to pay Rs 100 per month while the government would deposit Rs 200. This decision follows a directive by the Law Department in April 2025, that mandates specific guidelines to provide security to workers working in dangerous industries.
