Attenborough's 'Gandhi' to be made in Kannada soon, announces Congress govt in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Gandhi, the Academy award-winning 1982 biopic on the life of Mahatma Gandhi by Richard Attenborough, will be brought out in Kannada, the Congress government announced on Monday.

This will be done as part of a yearlong celebration starting December 26 mark a hundred years of Gandhi presiding over the historic Belgaum (now Belagavi) session of the Congress in 1924.

A committee under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, constituted to decide on how to celebrate the centenary event, met here Monday.

It was decided to erect memorials at 120 locations across Karnataka that Gandhi visited during his lifetime. The government will also bring out a special stamp to mark the occasion.

Siddaramaiah directed the committee to prepare for yearlong programmes under the 'Gandhi Bharata' banner.

It was decided that all schools will be given copies of Gandhi's Seven Deadly Sins and the Preamble of the Constitution.

On December 26, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held in Belagavi. On December 27, a public meeting has been planned.

Dasara-like lighting

On the lines of Mysuru Dasara, the Siddaramaiah-led committee decided to light up (deepalankara) 32 km of arterial roads and 30 junctions in Belagavi.

A special memorial (Veera Soudha) will come up on the place where the 1924 session was held. It will also house a library and a Gandhi statue. Several other beautification projects will be taken up. At Kanabaragi, a bust will come up at Gangadhar Rao Deshpande's memorial and a museum will be inaugurated.
