<p>Bengaluru: The <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/karnataka-high-court">Karnataka High Court</a> on Thursday quashed the FIR registered against Tejaswi Surya, BJP MP from Bengaluru south, for allegedly spreading 'fake news' about the suicide of a farmer in Haveri district. </p><p>Justice M Nagaprasanna passed this order while allowing the petition filed by Surya.</p><p>On November 7, Surya had shared an article from a Kannada news portal, and said that a farmer, Rudrappa Channappa Balikai, had died by suicide after discovering the name of the Waqf Board in his land records. The police had clarified that the suicide had occurred on January 6, 2022 and that it was due to financial pressures and outstanding loans.</p>.Day after 'fake news' FIR, Tejasvi Surya says Siddaramaiah government 'falsifying' farmers' claims.<p>The police had registered a suo-motu case under section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Tejaswi Surya for publishing or circulating statements intended to promote hatred, ill-will, or enmity between different groups.</p><p>On November 14, the court had considered the submission made by Surya that the tweet, allegedly termed as fake, was deleted after the police issued a clarification about the suicide. The petitioner also stated that the issue was clarified after the father of the deceased gave an interview. The court, while granting interim order, had said that offence under IPC section 505 (2) is identical to IPC section 153A and that the ingredients, prima facie, would not become an offence in the case at hand.</p>
