Karnataka to move Supreme Court on sticking to MGNREGA

The cabinet meeting on Thursday decided to approach the Supreme Court, requesting to allow the state to continue the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA) and to frame an action plan for the current year.

Following the delay by the Union government in issuing a notification regarding the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB G RAM G) and questioning the snatching away of the state government’s Constitutional right to work by the Central government, it has decided to file a petition before the Supreme Court immediately.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said, “We are already in May, but the Union government has not issued a notification regarding the implementation of VB G RAM G. Instead, they just issued a circular asking the states to continue the existing work under MGNREGA without giving any funds. Following this, we are approaching the Supreme Court.”

He further stated that there are no alternate arrangements announced by the Union government for MGNREGA. “In the interest of the public, MGNREGA is necessary, and we will be asking the court to allow us to frame an action plan,” he added.

It can be recalled that in December 2025, the Centre passed the VB G RAM G Act, replacing the MGNREGA.
