Karnataka: Work begins on 5th, 6th unit at Kaiga nuclear power plant

'The duration for construction of nuclear power plant is reckoned from the day of first pour of concrete. The fifth unit will commence production within the next 60 months,' Atomic Energy Commission chairperson Ajit Kuma Mohanty said.

Karwar: The first pour of concrete for the construction of fifth and sixth unit of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant in Karwar began on Sunday with Atomic Energy Commission chairperson Ajit Kuma Mohanty launching the work.

"The duration for construction of nuclear power plant is reckoned from the day of first pour of concrete. The fifth unit will commence production within the next 60 months. These two new units will be one of the safest nuclear installations in the world," Mohanty said.

He said that both the units will have an installed capacity of 700 MW each. "Ten new plants of similar capacity are being set up in the country. India has achieved self-sufficiency in nuclear power. Indigenous material and technology are being used for construction of nuclear plants," he said.
