Law & order in disarray as govt prioritises 'minority appeasement': BJP

The BJP, on Thursday, accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara of failing to maintain law and order in the state, since they were prioritising minority appeasement over public safety.

Highlighting recent incidents in Mangaluru, including the murder of BJP worker Suhas Shetty, BJP state president B Y Vijayendra said the home minister was threatened and prevented from visiting the victim’s (Shetty’s) family.

“If ministers themselves are being intimidated, what safety can ordinary citizens expect?” he said.

He alleged that the government’s primary focus remained appeasement politics and not ensuring peace and security.

Haveri-Gadag MP Basavaraj Bommai criticised the government and the police for losing control over law and order.

“Criminals no longer fear the cops and police stations have become dens of corruption. Consequently, anti-social elements are taking law into their hands,” Bommai said. The former chief minister attributed the erosion of public trust in the government to its appeasement policies.

Senior BJP leader and former minister V Sunil Kumar asserted that communal harmony in the coastal districts had gone for a toss ever since the Congress assumed power.

“Their appeasement politics is responsible for this,” he said, cautioning against provoking the self-respect of local communities with “lowly and distasteful statements” by those in the government.
