'Maintenance paid, access denied': Residents allege unfair curbs in Bengaluru housing society

You’ve probably come across many posts about house-hunting troubles, PG food issues, and strict landlord rules in Bengaluru and nearby areas. But a recent case has caught attention for a more serious reason — a housing society allegedly charging residents for amenities while restricting access to only a select few.

In a post on the popular platform Reddit, a user claimed that residents living in smaller units in a Karnataka housing society were barred from using common facilities despite being billed for them as part of maintenance charges.

According to the post, the user moved into a 480 sq ft 1RK apartment when the society was still being formed, paying what they described as a relatively high rent partly to access amenities like the gym and swimming pool. The tenant added that the property owner had earlier hinted at resistance from some residents regarding 1BHK occupants using shared facilities, but had suggested a one-time payment option to solve the issue.

However, the situation reportedly worsened, with the society denying access altogether. “They are not even allowing a one-time payment... We have to pay like a guest per day if we want to use the amenities. The worst part is they are taking maintenance from us,” the user wrote.

The post sparked reactions online, with many questioning the fairness of the move. One user commented, “With their logic they shouldn't use public road as they are paying less tax. Guys with 5 BHK villas or individual houses only should use public road.”
