Mangaluru: 3 including habitual offender arrested in robbery case

Mangaluru: Police have arrested three persons including an absconding accused and a habitual offender with 30 cases against him in connection with a robbery reported at Tannibavi beach in Panambur police station limits.

Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH said the arrested have been identified as Mohammed Sinan (24) and Zaheer Nisar (22), both residents of Kasaba Bengre and Chandu Haris (33), a resident of Kasaba Bengre. Chandu Haris has more than 30 cases registered against him. A rowdy sheet had already been opened against him at Panambur Police Station, and three warrants related to previous cases were pending before the court.

According to a complaint filed by Ajay K, a resident of Somwarpet, he along with his friends Ramesh and Rafiq, had decided to celebrate his birthday at Tannirbavi Beach on April 13. While approaching the beach, they lost their way and proceeded towards Kasaba Bengre. During this time, they noticed two youths walking along the roadside and stopped their car to ask for directions. The youths offered to guide them and got into the back seat of the car. After driving a short distance, the accused allegedly forced the complainant to stop the vehicle. They then threatened the complainant and his friends with a screwdriver, damaging the front windshield of the car and robbing valuables. The stolen items comprised a wristwatch worth about Rs 9,000, another wristwatch valued at Rs 3,000, cash of Rs 2,000, a camera gimbal worth Rs 8,000, a power bank worth Rs 2,000, and a rolled gold bracelet valued at Rs 500. The total value of stolen property amounted to approximately Rs 24,500. Additionally, damage to the car windshield caused a loss of around Rs 8,000, bringing the total loss to about Rs 32,500.

A case was registered at Panambur Police Station under Sections 309(4) and 324(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and Section 2(a) of the Karnataka Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1981.

During the investigation, under the guidance of senior officers, Police Inspector Saleem Abbas, along with PSI Srikala KT, PSI Jnanashekar, and staff, conducted an operation and arrested Mohammed Sinan and Zaheer Nisar (22) and recovered a camera gimbal, a watch, and the screwdriver used in the crime from their possession. Later, they arrested Chandu Haris and recovered the remaining stolen items including a motorcycle used in the crime.
