Mangaluru’s Wenlock Hospital sets up 10-bed special unit to treat heatstroke victims

Mangaluru: With temperatures rising in the city, Wenlock Hospital has recently established a dedicated 10-bed heatstroke treatment unit on the fifth floor of its new surgical block.

According to the experts at the Wenlock hospital, if symptoms such as elevated body temperature, confusion, or loss of consciousness are noticed, immediate medical assistance should be sought by dialing the emergency helpline (108).

They added that, heatstroke can be life-threatening and requires urgent professional care. The patient should be moved to a shaded area, an air-conditioned room, or any cool place. The body temperature must be reduced quickly by applying ice or immersing the patient in water. If possible, the patient should be placed in a tub filled with cold water.

Experts said that water may also be sprayed on the body using a garden hose, or the patient can be covered with towels soaked in cold water. Ice packs or cold wet cloths should be placed on the armpits, neck, back, and groin areas. A fan may be used to help evaporate water from the skin and speed up cooling. If the patient is conscious, cold water or electrolyte drinks should be given. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages must be avoided. Tight or heavy clothing should be loosened to aid recovery.

Amid the rising temperatures, to prevent heatstroke, fluids such as water, tender coconut water, and ORS should be consumed regularly throughout the day, even if one does not feel thirsty. Outdoor activities should be minimised or avoided between 11 am and 4 p.m. People are advised to wear light, loose-fitting, and light-coloured cotton clothes. Exposure to sunlight should be increased gradually so the body can adapt to the heat. Children, elderly persons, and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles. Those working or exercising outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded areas. Elderly people and individuals with chronic illnesses require special care during extreme heat conditions.

Symptoms of heatstroke

Symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature, confusion, slurred speech, unconsciousness, hot or dry skin or excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, cold or clammy skin, dizziness, fainting, weak pulse, and nausea.
