<p>In the backdrop of the demise of 23-year-old Delhi gang-rape victim (Nirbhaya) early morning on Saturday, residents of Mysore in huge numbers, came on to the streets to protest, pray for her soul to rest in peace.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Students and others — irrespective of caste, community, age and gender — took out rallies and staged protests at various venues. Demand for justice to the girl who was brutally raped by six men in a moving bus at country’s capital, echoed in the city in slogans of people. <br /><br />Activists of Ashodaya Samithi submitted a memorandum at deputy commissioner’s office after taking out a rally from Dalvoy school. They offered prayers in a unique manner. <br /><br />Father Solomon Reddy of Blessed Mother Teresa Church, Rajivnagar, Shettihalli Mutt seer Basavanna Swamiji and Akram Pasha who is also president of the samithi prayed for the girl’s soul to rest in peace. They mentioned about the safety to all working women.<br /><br />Protestors observed that serious probe should be conducted into cases of Surat, Kolkata and the most recent one — Hassan. Highlighting the Surat gang rape case, Akram Pasha said, only seven among 15 members have been arrested so far after the incident happened on December 25. “Police and government yield to the political background of the accused,” he added.<br /><br />Bhagyalakshmi, Hemavathi, Girija, Pallavi, Pranati Prakash, Shivaram and others participated. <br /><br />Mourning<br /><br />Members of Gnana Jyothi Samsthe and Mysore Zilla Stree Shakti Okkuta marched from the court to deputy commissioner’s office. They raised slogans against government and demanded immediate action against culprits. Protestors mourned the death observing silence for two minutes. They will be submitting collection of signatures in Mysore to governor of Karnataka and President of India. They demanded amendment in the law to punish the offenders immediately. <br /><br />Secretary of Gnana Jyothi Samsthe, M S Hemalatha said, the gang, though arrested, has not been punished. The delay in justice, relatively encourages the crime.<br />She said, there is no meaning in providing reservation for women and banning foeticide if they are deprived of safety. Lack of respect towards women among the society hampers development of the country indirectly as her best services will not be available.<br /><br />Abuse in media<br />Members of Akhila Bharatha Mahila Samskruthika Sangatane staged protest at Ramaswamy Circle. President Sandhya criticised abuse of women in media in name of globalisation and other developments.<br /><br />Students of Maharani’s Junior College under the banner of Akhila Bharata Vidyarthi Parishat marched from their college to the DC’s office and raised slogans against governments for neglecting the sexual assault cases. <br /><br />Members of the Bikerni Association took out a bike rally from Kote Anjaneya temple, on premises of Palace to the DC’s office protesting against the issue.<br /></p>
