200 more beds within 2 years: Jayadeva hospital in Mysuru set for major upgrade to meet growing demands

Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in Mysuru recently, after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a major expansion of the hospital.

The expansion of the facility, with a new building, would ease overcrowding at the Out Patient Department (OPD) of the hospital, which receives approximately 900 patients every day. It will be upgraded from 400-bed to 600-bed, with additional facilities for the benefit of the people.

Jayadeva Hospital, on KRS Road in Mysuru city, was formally launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in 2014. It has been treating hundreds of patients every day from not only Mysuru, but also from Kodagu, Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Hassan districts. Before the Mysuru hospital was established in 2010, the patients had to go to Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru for treatment.

Influx of patients

It may be mentioned that the influx of patients is on a rise to the hospital that provides advanced, but affordable cardiac care. This has put an extra burden on the hospital, which is abuzz with activity right from early morning. It is common to see patients lining up before the registration counters as early as 5 am, most of them from various taluks of the Mysuru region.

Responding to the long-pending demand for additional facilities, the CM announced that the Jayadeva Hospital in Mysuru will be upgraded from the existing 400-bed capacity to 600 beds at a cost of Rs 180 crore, to improve the cardiac care facility of the region, in the budget. With the completion of the project, the hospital would be the second largest Jayadeva Hospital in Karnataka, after Bengaluru, to serve the patients of Mysuru and surrounding districts.

Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences Director Dr B Dinesh said, “A 200-bed facility will be added to Jayadeva Hospital in Mysuru. Once the government order is issued, the works would be started and completed within 24 months.”

“We have submitted a proposal to establish Jayadeva hospital in Central and Coastal Karnataka,” he stated.

Dr Dinesh inspected the wards, canteen, emergency division, parking area, along with Dr K S Sadanand, Medical Superintendent, Jayadeva, Mysuru.

Speaking to DH, Dr Sadanand said that the OPD is crowded  at present. “We will shift Cardiac Surgery, Paediatric Care, Electro Physiology and Vascular treatment departments to the special OPDs in the new building. The main building will have only Cardiology to prevent overcrowding,” he said.

Two more Operation Theatres (OT) and Cath Labs will be added along with the existing four OTs and four cath labs. Two Intensive Cardiac Care Units will be added. Besides, additional male and female wards with 50-bed each, plus special wards will be opened, all totalling 200, he said.

The hospital can treat an additional 200 to 300 patients once the new building is established, he said.

It has been announced in the budget, funds should be released and it should be approved by the Cabinet. Planning is going on and the works will start within two or three months. The authorities want to complete it within two years, Dr Sadanand said.
