Karnataka govt committed to strengthen healthcare delivery systems, early diagnosis: Dinesh Gundu Rao

Mysuru: Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao said that a multidisciplinary approach is vital for the management of cleft conditions.

"Modern advancements including virtual surgical planning, presurgical infant orthopaedics, specialised speech therapy training, when combined with clinical expertise and team work can significantly improve the outcomes and quality life for cleft patients," Dinesh Gundu Rao pointed.

"Surgeons, anesthesiologists, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, speech and language therapists and many other allied specialists must work in close coordination to ensure comprehensive care across all stages of a patient's life."

He was speaking at the annual conference of the Indian Society of Cleft Lip Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies ( (ISCLPCA)- Indocleftcon 2026, organised at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, in Mysuru Thursday.

Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said, "The theme of the conference-'Connect, Communicate, Collaborate,' reflects the need for stronger integration among disciplines, institutions and regions."

He said, "The Government of Karnataka remains committed to strengthening healthcare delivery systems, supporting early diagnosis and facilitating access to corrective surgeries and rehabilitation services related to Cleft lip and palate care."

He presented an award of distinguished service to the community to NGO 'Smile Train India' on the occasion and he said, "The NGO has transformed the cleft care delivery system by supporting over 7 lakh cleft surgeries across more than 150 partner hospitals in India ensuring that quality care reaches even remote and under served regions. It is working with a sustainable model that empowers local surgeons and hospitals. We recognise the importance of partnerships with professional bodies, institutions and organisations to ensure that no child is left untreated due to lack of awareness or access."

Rao said, "Cleft lip and palate remain among the most common congenital anomalies worldwide. In India, it is estimated that approximately one in every 700 live births is affected. These conditions, while correctable, require timely intervention and sustained care. Without appropriate management they can significantly impact feeding, speech, hearing, dental development, facial growth and psychosocial well-being."

The conference brought together about 400 participants, craniofacial professionals including anesthesiologists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, pediatric dentists, plastic surgeons, speech and language therapists, and other allied specialists from across India and abroad.

A total of 150 scientific papers focusing on multidisciplinary aspects of cleft care were presented in parallel sessions, showcasing current research, clinical innovations, and collaborative approaches.

The experts discussed and deliberated on key issues in cleft care, while fostering meaningful integration and collaboration within the professional community.
