<p>The State government, through Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority, has decided to rent bicycles for the foreign tourists to pedal around in the City of Ruins.<br /><br /></p>.<p>After introducing battery-operated eco-friendly cars to ferry the tourists to the ruins spread over an area of 41.8 kilometers, the Hampi authority now plans to rent bicycles to the overseas tourists to visit the ruins on either side of Tungabhadra river. <br /><br />This facility can be availed by local tourists too.<br /><br />Experimental basis<br />At present, the foreign tourists, hiring bicycles from locals, pedal their way around in the erstwhile capital of Vijayanagar empire. <br /><br />The Hampi authority, having seen a good response from the foreign tourists, has decided to introduce the cycle scheme on an experimental basis. <br /><br />It has decided to procure 50 bicycles and has set aside Rs 6 lakh for the same. If the new scheme works, the authority would extend it in a phased manner in the coming days, said M Pawankumar, Commissioner, Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority. <br /><br />Open museum<br />Hampi is like an open museum. The tourists visiting the City of Ruins should not be limited to the monuments. The city located on the either side of Tungabhadra river is endowed with abundant natural beauty and the area is a rich reserve of flora and fauna. <br /><br />Touring the region on cycles would give the tourists access to the ruins in isolated places and they can also enjoy the scenic beauty of Anegondi, Anjanadri Hills among others. <br /><br />Also, it is not possible to walk the stretch to catch the glimpses of monuments of the empire of the medieval times. And movement of private vehicles have been restricted at several places in the area. <br /><br />Therefore, touring the world heritage centre on cycle is the best option available for the visitors. <br /><br /> The Hampi World Heritage Area Management Authority is planning to issue licence to the private companies or individuals for renting out bikes (motorised) to the tourists. <br /><br />It had earlier banned the private companies providing bikes on rent to the tourists as they had not taken permission from the authority or any competent body.<br /> </p>
