Kalaburagi Mahanagar Palike’s general body meeting on Monday decided to levy a fee for the use of UGD by residential, residential complexes, hotels, restaurants, lodges and industries in the City.

It is also decided to prepare a blueprint for various aspects like fixing the fee according to domestic, non-domestic and commercial use, apart from the use of the collected money, appointment of tax collectors, and improvement in sewage service.

“The annual expenditure, including salaries of internal sewage workers, repairs, sewage water treatment and electricity bills, amounts to Rs 10.80 crore. Although the circular issued by the government in 2011 had levied the sewage fee of Rs 15 for households, Rs 50 for non-residential and Rs 60 for commercial, it has not been collected till date. Now, there is a proposal to revise the UGD rate and charge Rs 50 for houses, Rs 100 for non-residential and Rs 200 to Rs 500 for commercial use,” an official told the meeting. Meanwhile, opposition leader Sachin Honna, corporators Vijayakumar Sewalani and Shambhuling Balabatti opposed this. “There is no clear information about how many houses there are in the city. The UGD system, which does not have a proper sewage system network, has collapsed. If you charge a fee without providing proper sewage service, people will question the members, they argued.

Congress member Syed Ahmed has suggested preparing a clear blueprint and conducting a survey to see how many houses have UGD connections before implementing the fee structure. The money collected should be used only for the UGD-related works, and sophisticated machines should be purchased for this purpose, he added. “We are spending Rs one crore every month for UGD. If only half of the money comes from the fee collection, we can use it for UGD and provide better service to the people. Let’s charge Rs 1,000 for lodges, Rs 3,000 for industries and marriage halls and Rs 50 for households”, Mayor Yallappa Nayakodi said.

He also directed the officials to prepare the UGD connection survey, blueprint, project details, and implementation method before the next meeting. Public Health, Education and Social Justice Standing Committee Chairman Sachin Sirwal, Urban Planning and Development Standing Committee Chairman Mohammad Azimuddin, Tax, Finance and Appeals Standing Committee Chairman Parveen Begum, Accounts Standing Committee Chairman Irfana Parveen and others were present.
