<p> A day after the Hubli-Miraj passenger train derailed at Karikatti village near Tummurguddi hillock between Sulebhavi and Suldhal railway stations in the district, rescue workers early on Tuesday morning, helped retrieve the body of a railway gangman who had been killed in the mishap.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Sources said Hemant Parashuram Kupannavar, 35, a resident of Budihal village in Gokak taluk, was boarding the locomotive when the train derailed. <br /><br />His body was found in a drain, metres away from the accident site.<br />About 30 passengers who were injured in the derailment have been admitted to hospitals in the district.<br /><br />Union Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa visited the spot on Tuesday and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next kin of the deceased and a job in the department.<br /><br />Compensation<br /><br />Agriculture and district In-Charge Minister Umesh Katti said that the Karnataka government was considering giving Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the closest relative of Kupannavar. “The injured will be provided free treatment,” the minister said.<br /><br />Member of Parliament Suresh Angadi, legislator Feroz Sait, Railway Users Committee president Mahendra Singhvi, Deputy Commissioner V Anbukumar, South Western Railway Deputy Regional Manager Rahul Jain and Railway Chief Commercial Manager Sanjib Haldar visited the spot.Train services on the route resumed at 3 pm on Tuesday.<br /><br />Direct train <br /><br />Muniyappa said that the Railways had agreed to lay a direct line between Belgaum and Dharwad. He said the proposal had been sent to the Planning Commission for approval. <br />Muniyappa made the announcement as he flagged off the inaugural special train between Yeshwantpur and Miraj, a tri-weekly express, here on Tuesday.</p>
