<p>Home Minister K J George, on Saturday, said the State government will soon take up recruitment to fill 8,500 vacancies in the Police department.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Speaking at a workshop organised jointly by the Karnataka Media Academy, Bangalore City Police and the Information Department, the minister said there were 22,000 vacancies, mostly that for constables in the Police force, and recruitments would be taken up in a phased manner to strengthen the department.<br /><br />He said 20 per cent of the posts would be reserved for women. To make way for the shortfall in personnel, the services of 7,000 home guards had been pressed into service for traffic management.<br /><br />Dwelling to the traffic scene in Bangalore, George said that CCTV cameras had been installed in various points in the City. Those violating traffic rules would not be spared, he said.<br /><br />George said the government would soon streamline its student police cadet project wherein police personnel will visit schools and impart education to students on law, discipline, civic sense, among others. <br /><br />K J George hit back at BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa for seeking his resignation, by stating that he (George) was appointed by the Congress high command and was answerable to the chief minister. <br /><br />Yeddyurappa had recently stated that chief minister Siddaramaiah’s outburst against police officers at their annual conference in Bangalore indicated that the government had lost control over the law and order situation in the State. Yeddyurappa had sought the replacement of the Home minister.<br /><br />Minister for Information and Infrastructure Roshan Baig stressed the need for constituting a commission to usher in reforms in the Police force. He also sought the setting up of ‘tourism police’ to protect places of historical interest and help tourists.</p>
