<p>The Akshara Dasoha wing of the district is planning to include steaming hot ragi balls (mudde) once a week to be distributed to the students under the midday meal scheme.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The scheme has already been introduced in Kolar district, where ragi balls are being provided once a week since January last year, evoking a good response from both students and parents.<br /><br />The success of the scheme has encouraged the department to introduce the same in Mandya, Hassan, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts.<br />Ragi is grown extensively in Mysore region and there was a plan to add ragi balls with the midday meal last year.<br /><br />But, ragi is not grown in districts of North Karnataka, as jowar is the staple foodgrain. Hence, there was a demand that the students be provided ‘jowar rotti’ in place of ‘ragi mudde’.<br /><br />Uniform diet pattern<br /><br />But, the National Human Resource Development Department had formed a policy that suggested uniform diet pattern. Hence, the idea of supplying ragi ball and jowar rotti was temporarily stalled.<br /><br />Currently, the midday meal includes food prepared with rice, dal and vegetables. The parents are of the opinion that ragi balls too should be provided once in a week. As part of this, the Akshara Dasoha wing had submitted a report last year suggesting that ragi balls thrice a week along with the midday meal. It had also provided the estimated expenditure and others to the HRD department.<br /><br />Akshara Dasoha joint director Jayakumar has disclosed the plans of providing ragi balls to the districts coming under Mysore division, which has received positive response from the parents.<br /><br />Students<br /><br />There are a total of 936 primary and high schools in the district, and midday meal is being provided to 1,03,595 students studying from 1st to 10th standard.<br />Speaking to Deccan Herald, Swamy of Akshara Dasoha district wing said that currently, primary school students are being provided 100 gm rice. <br /><br />If the scheme is implemented, ragi balls weighing 50 gm, and rice will be distributed for primary students. High school students will be given 75 gm rice and a ragi ball. <br />The department is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development to start making the preparations.<br /><br />2,180 LPG cylinders/month<br /><br />The district requires about 2,180 LPG cylinders every month under the midday meal scheme. The cylinders are supplied from Mangalore, for which Rs 20 lakh is spent every month. Every school will be provided with nine cylinders annually. As there is no subsidy available for the cylinders in Chamarajanagar taluk, the district incurrs a loss of Rs 27 lakh annually.<br /></p>
