Elderly Kerala woman stops two-wheeler on footpath, wins praises

A 73-year old woman in Kerala is being widely appreciated as she  stopped a two-wheeler that was riding through the footpath.

A video of the incident that took place at Kozhikode on Thursday went viral on social media. Kozhikode district collector Snehil Kumar Singh posted on social media  an illustration image of the incident with the message that footpaths are meant for pedestrians.

Kozhikode native Prabhavathy Koyyeri, who stopped the two-wheeler, is being showered with praises for her bold stand.

The incident took place at Eranhipalam in Kozhikode on Thursday afternoon. As Prabhavathy, who is a former hostel warden,  was walking along the footpath, a two-wheeler came against her. Despite the rider sounding horn and asking Prabhavathy to give way, she didn't oblige telling him that footpaths are meant for pedestrians.

As the rider kept on insisting, the septuagenarian went a step ahead by keeping her legs across the footpath and switched on her mobile camera. With no signs of Prabhavathy giving up, the rider turned the two-wheeler and returned.

City-based vlogger Aflah, who happened to be at the spot, captured the moments and posted it on social media. In no time the video went viral with many sharing similar experiences and suggesting reward to Prabhavathy.

Earlier also Prabhavathy had raised her voice against vehicles occupying foot paths and blocking the way of  pedestrians.

The incident assumed more significance as the number of pedestrians being killed in road accidents has been increasing alarmingly in the country. The Supreme Court had also taken up the issue earlier and directed the government to take steps to protect the rights of pedestrians.
