India’s strategic Zojila Tunnel nears breakthrough amid China, Pakistan tensions

Srinagar: As India sharpens its strategic posture along its borders with China and Pakistan, the long-delayed Zojila Tunnel is nearing a decisive milestone, promising to end Ladakh’s winter isolation and ensure year-round military and civilian access to the sensitive frontier region.

The project has entered its final excavation phase, with the “breakthrough”—when the two ends of the tunnel meet—expected by the end of May, according to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The development marks a major step forward in building one of India’s most critical high-altitude infrastructure projects.

Once completed, the 13.15-km tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, bypassing the treacherous Zojila Pass, which remains shut for nearly six months annually due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

The tunnel is expected to reduce travel time across the stretch to about 15 minutes, ensuring uninterrupted movement of people, goods and essential supplies.

Beyond its civilian utility, the tunnel carries immense strategic importance. Ladakh’s location along contested borders has long posed logistical challenges, particularly during winter months when road access is cut off.

The tunnel will enable year-round troop deployment and supply movement to forward areas, significantly enhancing India’s operational readiness.

The progress was reviewed in a recent meeting between Gadkari and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Brigadier B. D. Mishra, who also flagged safety concerns along the existing Zojila top stretch. He stressed the urgent need for avalanche protection measures, noting that the route will continue to be used even after the tunnel becomes operational.

The concern follows a recent avalanche incident in the area that claimed seven lives, underlining the vulnerability of the corridor.

Officials cautioned that the breakthrough will not immediately open the tunnel to traffic. Significant work remains, including installation of ventilation, safety systems, and road surfacing.

The project timeline has already been revised, with full completion now expected around early 2028, after earlier deadlines proved unrealistic due to extreme weather conditions and complex geology.

Once operational, the Zojila Tunnel is expected to serve as a lifeline for Ladakh, boosting economic activity while reinforcing India’s strategic infrastructure in a region of growing geopolitical importance.
