Sonam Wangchuk to join Cockroach Janta Party's protest in Delhi on June 6

Srinagar: Renowned climate activist from the Union Territory of Ladakh Sonam Wangchuk has said he will join the planned protest in Delhi on June 6 organised by the online movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), while sharply criticising India’s education system and calling for accountability from the Union Education Ministry.

In a video shared on X, Wangchuk questioned the nature of the online movement and said he initially sought clarity about its intent. “I had asked the cockroaches, in my previous post, to prove, to convince (me) that this Cockroach Janta Party is an expression of the Indian youth and not a conspiracy by foreign powers,” he said.

Wangchuk added that he was later contacted by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who shared information about the group’s support base. “When I spoke to him, I understood that they do not have any ulterior motive, that they are immensely patriotic, that they are making a qurbani, a sacrifice to improve the country,” he said.

The activist said the planned mobilisation in Delhi is aimed at demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister Darmendra Pradhan, linking it to grievances over examination systems and student distress.

“On the 6th, which is (a) Saturday, they are calling people to Delhi so that we can demand the resignation of the Education Minister,” he said.

Wangchuk, who has spent decades working on education reform and innovation, said his concerns are rooted in long-standing dissatisfaction with systemic outcomes.

“I have been striving and fighting in the field of education for the last four decades,” he noted, adding that despite repeated efforts, meaningful change has been slow.

Wangchuk also offered a broader critique of governance in the education sector, remarking that looking at recent years, he does not believe promises of development are being backed by effective policy implementation. 

“Looking at the last three or four education ministers… I do not feel that a developed India is going to happen,” he said.

Referring to issues such as examination irregularities, he argued that accountability is essential in a democratic system.

“In any self-respecting country, in a democracy, any self-respecting education minister would resign if such things happen; if papers are leaked,” Wangchuk said.

He further stated that if the resignation demand is not met, he would join the protest in Delhi. “…if this does not happen even by June 5th, then out of compulsion, I too will join you all on 6th June,” he said, adding that he would participate alongside the organisers.

Ending his remarks, Wangchuk invoked a call to collective action, saying: “If not now, when? If not us, who?”

The CJP movement, which began as a digital campaign, has drawn attention for its rapid online spread and mobilisation around education and employment-related concerns. Wangchuk’s support is expected to add further visibility to the June 6 gathering in the national capital.
