Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani named new Chief of Defence Staff

Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd) has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff on Saturday.

He will also function as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.

He is expected to assume office after Gen Anil Chauhan completes his tenure on 30 May 2026.

Ministry of Defence posted on X: "A highly decorated officer with over four decades of distinguished service, Lt Gen Raja Subramani is currently serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since Sep 2025. He earlier served as Vice Chief of the Army Staff and GOC-in-C, Central Command, besides commanding key operational formations along the Western & Northern fronts."

Lt Gen Subramani is currently working as a military adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat.

He served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 01, 2024 to July 31, 2025.

Additionally, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Navy Chief. He will take over on May 31.
