<p>Self-proclaimed <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/self-styled-godman">godman</a> ‘Captain’ Ashok Kharat, who has been arrested in multiple sexual assault cases, was leading an extravagant lifestyle and had made significant investments in properties across Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts of Maharashtra.</p><p>According to police, he allegedly opened more than 130 accounts in two cooperative credit societies under different names, carrying out transactions worth nearly Rs 63 crore over the past few years, reported <em>PTI</em>. The 67-year-old, who describes himself as an astrologer, numerologist, hypnotist and cosmologist, is currently facing multiple FIRs, including sexual assault charges, and is under investigation by a <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/tags/special-investigation-team">Special Investigation Team</a> (SIT).</p><p>Reportedly, one of the accounts was opened in the name of the sister of former Maharashtra State Women’s Commission chairperson Rupali Chakankar, who stepped down last month after her alleged links to Kharat surfaced following his arrest in Nashik.</p><p>These revelations came to light during an investigation into a cheating case registered in Ahilyanagar district against Kharat, his wife Kalpana, and three others. One cooperative society recorded transactions exceeding Rs 60 crore, while another saw over Rs 2.74 crore. All accounts reportedly listed Kharat as the nominee and used his mobile number as the contact.</p><p>Investigators believe Kharat operated these accounts himself, depositing money received from individuals who approached him for consultations.</p><p>Currently in SIT custody until April 8, Kharat is facing at least 10 FIRs, including serious sexual assault charges.</p>
