Complaint about theft of Rs 400 crore fake: Nashik police

Mumbai: Nearly five months after a sensational case of assault, kidnapping and theft of demonetised Rs 2,000 notes valued at around Rs 400 crore was reported, it turned out to be fake.

According to Nashik Rural Police, which formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and carried out a detailed investigation, found that no such robbery had taken place.

After the incident, the Maharashtra police took the help of the Karnataka police and Goa police to crack the case.

During the incident, the Nashik police SIT found conflicting accounts of complainant Sandeep Patil.

The Rs 2,000 currency note was withdrawn from circulation in May 2023, though it still has the status of a legal tender.

The so-called incident dates back to 22 October 2025 when two container-trucks carrying a massive quantity of cash allegedly went missing in the forested and accident-prone Chorla Ghat stretch in Khanapur tehsil in Belagavi district on the tri-junction along the Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary.

According to the police, there was no evidence of any truck carrying such a large amount of cash, the news agency reported.

The driver had shared videos on social media describing his alleged ordeal. Based on his complaint, seven people were arrested for assaulting him.

The case was heard in the Igatpuri court, which ordered the release of all seven accused.

Police are now considering legal action against Patil for filing a false complaint.
