Myanmar President expresses interest in India's maritime sector during visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port

Mumbai: Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing has expressed interest in India's maritime sector during his visit to the leading container traffic port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, accompanied by a delegation of 67 officials, JNPA said in a statement.

He also emphasised the delegation's keen interest in understanding the sector better, learning from JNPA's experience, and exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange and cooperation, it added.

Upon arrival at Jawaharlal Nehru Port, the delegation was welcomed by JNPA Chairperson Gaurav Dayal, along with the heads of various departments at the maritime facility, the statement said.

During the visit, the delegation was given a comprehensive presentation on JNPA's port infrastructure, operational capabilities, capacity expansion initiatives, strategic development projects, sustainability measures, and future growth roadmap.

The presentation also highlighted the development of the Vadhvan Port Project, envisioned as one of India's largest deep-draft ports and a key driver of maritime trade growth in the region, JNPA said.

"The visit provided an excellent opportunity to showcase India's maritime capabilities, JNPA's operational excellence, and our future-oriented development initiatives, including the Vadhvan Port Project.

"We look forward to strengthening maritime and trade cooperation between India and Myanmar and exploring avenues for enhanced regional connectivity and economic collaboration," said Dayal.

The delegation also visited the port vicinity to gain first-hand insight into the port's efficient functioning, cargo handling operations, and integrated logistics ecosystem.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase JNPA's infrastructure and its contribution to facilitating international trade, the port operator said, adding that it also underscores the growing importance of maritime cooperation and regional partnerships in advancing trade, connectivity, and sustainable economic development across the wider Indo-Pacific region.

JNPA, currently, operates five container terminals - NSFT, NSICT, NSIGT, BMCT and APMT.

The Port also has a shallow water berth for general cargo operated by Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal, while the Liquid Cargo Terminal at the facility is managed by the BPCL-IOCL consortium, and the additional liquid cargo terminal developed by JNPA is operated by JSW - JNPT Liquid Terminal Pvt Ltd.

Additionally, the newly constructed coastal berth links other Indian ports and facilitates enhancing the traffic of coastal containers.

Besides, JNPA operates a multi-product SEZ with infrastructure to boost export-oriented industries and is developing an all-weather, deep-draft, greenfield port at Vadhvan.
