<p>New Delhi: Even before the official beginning of the monsoon season, the south west monsoon has covered nearly half of the country, bringing copious rains to the southern peninsula and parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai.</p><p>While the monsoon is set to enter central India, the west coast may witness heavy precipitation in the next couple of days.</p><p>More rains are expected in other parts of the country because a depression is shaping up near the Odisha coast and north west India is set to receive a fresh spell of rainfall due to an impending Western Disturbance.</p>.Karnataka govt failed to take precautionary measures to tackle rains: BJP's R Ashoka.<p>As on Wednesday, the monsoon has covered south India, most of the north east and parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.</p><p>“Such an early monsoon is good for agriculture and drinking water. In Karnataka, over 80 per cent of local tanks are full. This will not only help in ground water recharge, but local farmers are also assured of the irrigation,” K J Ramesh, former director general of meteorology at the India Meteorological Department told DH.</p><p>This is the third earliest arrival of the south west monsoon since independence after 1962 (May 17), 2009 (May 23) and 1988 and 2025 (both on May 24).</p><p>As a consequence, a large part of the country is likely to be touched by the monsoon clouds even before the season officially begins on June 1.</p><p>“Conditions are favourable for further advance of the south west monsoon – the lifeline for Indian agriculture - over more parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha, remaining areas of the north east states and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim in the next two days,” an IMD official said.</p>.Last-minute monsoon prep: BBMP to procure boats, pumps, flood-relief gear.<p>Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over west coast - Kerala, Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra and Goa – in next three days with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over Kerala and Tamil Nadu up to May 30 and in coastal and ghat areas of Karnataka till Thursday. It is likely to reduce thereafter.</p><p>Ramesh said advancement of the south west monsoon by nearly two weeks would help every sector that relies on groundwater, and particularly those farmers who didn’t have access to canal irrigation.</p><p>In the east, a well-marked low pressure area has formed in the Bay of Bengal and it is likely to concentrate into a depression in the next 24 hours.</p><p>A fresh Western Disturbance – a storm originating in the Mediterranean that moves across Asia – is set to hit north west India, as a result of which rainfall along with thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely to occur in north west India from Thursday.</p><p>The IMD has forecast that India would be receiving above normal rainfall - 106 per cent of the average - in the current monsoon season. Also, June will turn out to be another wet month as more than 108 per cent of average rain is expected.</p>
