Pharma & Life Sciences GCCs trim drug timelines by 1–2 years, cut R&D-to-launch costs 5%

Hyderabad: India's Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are reshaping the pharma and life sciences drug development chain beyond tech alone, driving down full-cycle R&D expenses. A KPMG and UnearthIQ report showed full rollout of AI, automation, and analytics in GCCs shortening timelines from 10–15 years to 9–13 years.

These advances according to the report pull R&D staff off grunt work onto breakthrough ideas, dropping R&D-to-launch costs from 20–30% to 15–25%. GCCs speed target spotting, protein modeling, and screening in R&D/preclinical phases, shaving 5–6 years off early steps.

In trials, AI aids recruitment, design, and live data crunching, cutting another 4–6 years while lifting hit rates. India now hosts over 150 such Healthcare and Life Sciences GCCs including R&D centers, Global Business Services, Shared Services, and Centres of Excellence employing more than three lakh professionals. Pharma leads with 30–35% of the landscape, followed by life sciences (20–25%), medical devices (20–25%), healthcare/health-tech (20%), providers (10%), and payers (5%).

GCCs boost early discovery via target ID, proteins, screening with 5–6 years saved; trials gain from AI recruitment/design/analytics with 4–6 years faster, better odds, as per the report “Making it matter: How GCCs transform capability into end-patient impact”

“GCC evolution hinges on business needs and sector know-how next, using GenAI against core hurdles for real returns. As tech/innovation centers, GCCs clean data, weave tech into chains, build hybrid skills, tap ecosystems for R&D push clearing paths for global pharma/life sciences,” said KPMG India's GCC Partner and Leader Shalini Pillay.

India's healthcare/MedTech GCCs had also shifted fast from engineering aid to product innovation hubs, the report noted.

“The healthcare/life sciences GCC setup here jumps past old maturity paths. Firms, tech allies, talent pool up for core-first builds in discovery, trials, digital health—turning GCCs into key spots molding worldwide patient results,” said UnearthIQ co founder Gaurav Vasu.

Enterprises, tech firms, academia, startups, state aid fuel GCC growth with niche skills and teamwork vibes for outsized effects.

GCCs take full-chain duties past back-office roles, hitting patients direct by quicker therapies, stronger trials, cheaper dev—yielding affordable drugs, speedier wins in cancer, rare ills, chronic woes, according to the report that was released at BioAsia 2026 in Hyderabad held on Feb 17-18.
